Nights and noises

Loud nights and creaking.

Barking voices of the dogs

Smelling around for fish bones

Days come.

The voice of a cow home

For its calf.

Secretly walks through the mud

Trying to get back to its calf;

Learning its head through

The weta-eaten rails,

Trying to get back to its calf.

Rolling its brown glass eyes,

Making a noise to make the

Calf answer back.

A man comes and lets the cow in

Looking in the hay pen.

The noise of the engine starts

And slowly driving the cow into the bales

To be milked and leg-roped with the rope.

Pulling the dull-coloured calf along to have a suck.
