Biggles response

Biggles Defies The Swastika Captain W.E. Johns Fiction novel 6th/2/19

In the novel called Biggles defies the swastika, Biggles the main character lives in Norway surveying the countrys land and recording its features. Biggles was staying in a hotel and invaded by Germans who take over Norway, his mission is to stay under cover and find out information and leak it to the British so they can strike back at every move.

I found the Main character Bigglesworth very interesting as he is always on top of everybody else and can always work his way out on the spot, such as when he stole a German soldier’s motorcycle and had to face him face to face and come straight up with an excuse to get himself out of it. I kbow exacy how this feels as when I used to live in Invercargill I accidently hit a teachers BMW with a clump of dirt, I tryed to get out of it by hiding from the teachers but that failed and me and a mate had to wash it infront of the school. Im sure this incident was very diffrent to what Biggles has to face but its all part of it.

The main messages I got out of the text was seeing how quickly things can turn on you and all your actions have consequences, this is because the novel is made up of challenges that Biggles overcomes but they all catch up to him eventually and lead him into trouble for example when the Germans find him and some British troops eating and then the same German recognizes Biggles and this causes him to be locked up on a German battleship. This reflects in basically every situation Biggles enters with a German soldier. Being a teenager we do alot of stupid things and all those things we do have consequences that we have to face, some people learn from their messtakes but most will repeat it and go through the same cycle again.

Bigglesworth had to go through an uncountable amount of challenges in this text but the main one was went he stole a German plane and flew away from the battle and landed on a rural airstrip and was greeted by the Germans, he got out of this one by running away dodging bullets and luckily coincidently meeting another British troop in a car. I thought as a response that Biggles was very lucky to get out of this certain situation as he was being shot at from multiple angles. I can’t relate to being shot at but I can tell you I believe it would be very action packed and the chances of getting out are low. In this stage of the book, Biggles says “run for it”, this shows that even he is afraid of being killed by the Germans.

The title of the written text ‘Biggles Defines The Swastika’, this is an appropriate title for this text as it tells us that Biggles discovers information about the Germans and goes undercover to know their every move. At different stages of the text Biggles wants to get of Norway this shows when he says “after we’ve eaten we’ll push off home” this shows that he is indecisive and has the means to stay because he does not want to leave his British troops in a death zone and recover them along with himself. Some people could relate to this as Biggles is not a selfish person and is willing to spare his own life for another. In the end Biggles actions paid off by him and all thr British troops going home this shows when Biggles says “Between ourselfs I was just windering if we would ever get home”, I believe this means Biggles is now relived that it is all over and he is finally going home. I thought this title was very suited to this text because it matched the book by giving the main point as a title.

I would definitely recommend this text to students aged from thirteen to sixteen, this is because some parts of the book are violent and it has a variety of words that maybe tricky for younger readers to understand. It is also important for the younger generation to learn about world war two so they can find out about the worlds history. Overall the text as a whole is very action packed and adventurous, this book would be a great book to read if you are getting back into reading and reading is not your thing as I discovered on my own.

  1. Good start Oli.

You could explain in more depth how you relate to the character Biggles. How did you get out of something? Is it stressful? Has your actions ever caught up with you personally? Give examples

Could you relate this to society? e.g. Does NZ need an army. Is it important for people your age to learn about world war 2, why?

There is a few spelling and grammar errors in here. Have a go at tidying these up.
