Bird And Sugar Boy Sofie Laguna Fiction Novel 15/03/19

In the fiction novel Bird and Sugar boy, by Sofie Laguna, the main character called James but he is known as Bird boy, as his new hobby is discovering new birds and exploring the wildlife. This is all triggered as his best friend Sugar boy is moving to Australia from the UK, Sugar boy runs away from home and attempts to travel to his best friends new home this goes wrong.

I found the main character very interesting as he is very curious about everything around him. James is always well alert and intrigued about things he finds around him such as when he finds the bird guide book which leads him to discover new parts in his town while also finding new birds he has never seen before and drawing them in a sketchbook. James best friend Sugar boy is moving away to Australia and he tries to travel there but he is overcome by big challenges and forced to get help home. James dad said “your a big dreamer James don’t fall into that trap, stick with reality- its the way things are”, this shows that his Dad sticks with reality and is definitely not a dreamer. My opion is James should be alble to dream but have an achivable goal with the dream not traveling on his own at such a young age. In my eyes James needs to have a reachable target or plan it for the future when he is more mature.

The message I got from this written text is don’t dream as big as James does and stick partly with reality as his Dad tells him to. Dreaming was the main reason for James running away from home and trying to travel to Australia but he was not successful. His Dad believes sticking with reality is the best option as you will get more work done and expect the unexpected. James Dad is very upfront with James his son downs his dreams straight away this causes James to run away and try to get to Australia on his own using £22.22, this was obviously not going to work out well. It is very clear to see that his Dad wants him to have a greater common sense.

James or as we know him Bird Boy is faced with lots of challenges as he tried to become a bird watcher and travel to Australia to also visit his old mate. The first challenge he faces is very minor this is when the pie sauce spills in his bag and stains all his maps so their useless to him. The big challenge for James is when he is confronted by a bunch of older teenagers and they steal all his belongings in his bag, luckily this is solved by an older man scaring them off and then James is safely directed home by the man. The older man asked “why are you leaving your family and travelling on your own” James replies “I really don’t know”, this shows that he is obviously confused and having second thoughts about leaving. I cannot relate to running away from home but I’m sure there are many young children who do this and have a good think about it and turn around as they should.

The title of the written text “Bird and Sugar Boy” is very appropriate for the text as it includes the main characters but also gives the reader some hints on the story before they even open it. The point of the title of a text is to hint or inform the reader on who the main charector or charectors is or what they do, this point is clear in this title so it is appropriate for the text.

In conclusion this book is suitable for aged 13 to 16 as it would be boring to read if you were any older than 16 as it is written with easy words and therefore not a challege for older or more skilled readers. Although this book is focused at aged 13 to 16 it is a very interesting text to read as it is event after event so it is always non stop action taking place.
